“The primary goal of Montessori education is to prepare the whole child to reach his/her full potential in all areas of life.”
The Montessori Method is based on the scientific observations of Dr. Maria Montessori. Dr. Montessori observed children naturally learning by absorbing knowledge from their environment absorbing and by the repetitions manipulating of the materials.
Maria Montessori once said, “A child’s work is to create the person she will become.” That philosophy is important to remember when a child is learning the Montessori way. Maria theorized that a child should be free to discover and use their innate mental powers. A Montessori classroom allows the children freedom to explore the environment, but also teaches self discipline and some order.
Our preschool program invites the child to a prepared environment where he/she is free to explore and learn without interruption. The environment is beautiful and organized drawing the child to areas of interest and meeting the child’s developmental needs. This structured environment gives the child concrete experiences where visual impressions are stored for later learning. Links to nature are seen throughout the classroom with the use of natural materials such as wood shelving and wood tables and plants. We bring in as much from the outdoors as possible. Children are responsible to take care of their classroom and are accountable to each other promoting social awareness and independence. Learning is never forced and comes naturally through the materials that the child is drawn to work with. Our primary goal for the child is that he/she reaches full potential and independence.
The activities in a practical life area are the foundation of a Montessori environment. This is where the child learns co-ordination, control of movement, concentration, a sense of order and a sense of community. This area empowers the child through his success with the materials and enhances his self image.
